Shane MacGowan continues his fight against a dreaded illness months after he was rushed to a medical facility.

In December 2022, The Pogues singer was hospitalized due to viral encephalitis, which is a virus-triggered inflammation of the brain. The rare condition can be fatal.

Shane MacGowan's Wife Wrote About Losing a Person

Prior to the new update, Victoria uploaded a photo of herself kissing MacGowan. She wrote a lengthy caption about love and how it can be the most beautiful and most painful thing one can experience at the same time.

"The really really big challenge that we all face is to go beyond what our minds think are the limits of love and what love really is," she went on. "A lot of the time that thing we call love can more accurately be described as attachment or desire or need or longing or closeness or connection."

Aside from the disease, MacGowan went through several health issues over the past years.

In 2015, he started using a wheelchair after breaking his pelvis. He also had oral health and dentistry complications, which he endured over the past few years.

The "Body of an American" singer was also diagnosed with pneumonia at one point, and a hip pain led him to be hospitalized.

"The light is killing me [...] but I wanted to wish you a Happy New Year and Happy Christmas. And many more, and all the luck in the world and all the love. Happy Christmas and Happy New Year, love Shane," he wrote in December 2022.
