Society always celebrates the records that top the Billboard 200 album chart. Back of The Billboards is a Music Times weekly segment that looks at the opposite end: the new record that finished closest to the back of the Billboard 200 for the previous week. We hope to give a fighting chance to the bands you haven't heard of. -
Daft Punk Plus Strong Bad = Awesome
Daft Punk may have become part of the ultimate pop culture reference however when its album 'Random Access Memories' was remixed with "Everybody to The Limit (Come On Fhqwhgads)" from HomestarRunner.com. -
Jay Z and Daft Punk's Collaboration Is Just As Good As It Sounds
Pitchfork has confirmed that "Computerized," a collaboration between Jay Z and Daft Punk is real (although they didn't cite sources). Still, many a mystery remains regarding the song, including "what was it meant for?" -
Daft Punk May Have Concert Plans
The last 12 months have potentially proven Daft Punk to be the current biggest-act-in-music. "Get Lucky" has been a pop culture staple, causing all sorts of videos to go viral. The track itself was one of the best-selling singles of 2013, and the duo's record Random Access Memories was named Album of The Year at the Grammys. And yet there's still been no indication of tour plans for the group. A report from the Rapid City Journal has given hints that plans are in the works however. -
Frozen Soundtrack Spends One More Week atop Billboard 200
Although the Grammys concluded more than a week ago, the final effects of the ceremony on album sales are best seen in this week's Billboard 200. Indeed, seven of the albums in the Top 10 this week were involved in the program, with a few owing their spots this week to their Grammy performances. -
WATCH: Metallica and Lang Lang Dominate All Other Grammy Performers with "One"
A more touching spectacle took place during the in memoriam segment--initiated by the first few bars of Lang Lang's Tchaik--despite misspelling Corey Monteith's name and excluding other revered names. -
Spotify Streams Way Up following Grammys for Daft Punk, more
Album and download sales are down. Everyone knows this. The number of viewers taking on the Grammys even year continues to rise however, most likely because they're on television, and the populace just can't handle things they can't see. Either way, musicians that are already pretty popular from a musical perspective see huge increases in activity following The Grammys' broadcast, at least according to numbers released by Spotify. -
Daft Punk and Lorde Carry Pop Music Flag at Grammys
Two acts dominated the pop categories at the 2014 Grammys, and they weren't necessarily the ones you expected. The best-selling single of the year, "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke, couldn't grab a trophy despite three nominations. The best-selling album of the year, The 20/20 Experience by Justin Timberlake, took home Best R&B Performance for "Pusher Love Girl" but fell flat for both of its Pop genre nominations. Daft Punk and Lorde weren't exactly surprise winners, but they ended the night the most decorated of the pop artists in attendance. -
For Better or Worse, Village Voice's Pazz+Jop Rank the Top Albums and Singles of 2013 [POLL]
While many argue the merits of the long-suffering publication as well as the results therein--hey, the lot of us feel the same way about the Grammys--the Voice's P+J issue (conceived of by disgraced music editor, Bob Xgau) is about as consensus as we're likely to get these days. -
Daft Punk and Mumford & Sons Top Vinyl Sales Charts
Every news service has been eager to tell you that vinyl sales continued to show huge gains, even as CD sales and digital music sales slumped in the United States. Sales of the 12" format increased by 32 percent, jumping from about 4.5 million in sales during 2012 to 6 million units moved during 2013. One piece of information not being shared as readily: What performers are dominating the vinyl resurgence? Nielsen Soundscan recently released its list of the Top 10 bestselling vinyl records of 2013. -
Nicole Oran's 2013 Playlist: Jay Z, Daft Punk and Savages
Music Times, like so many other music publications, was looking to publish a "Best of 2013" playlist. We met to discuss what such a playlist should include, and that's where we ran into trouble. We couldn't agree. Sometimes two of us just couldn't agree on whether the performer was amazing or terrible, and even when we agreed they were amazing, we couldn't agree on what track was most representative of their work. Hence it was decided that rather than try to agree (a seemingly impossible endeavor), everyone would get their own "favorites of 2013" playlist. We won't argue that these are necessarily the best tracks of the last year, but they're definitely songs that caught our respective attention and caused us to hit 'repeat" over and over and over again. -
Vampire Weekend and Kanye West Vie for Rolling Stone's Album of The Year Title
It just must be the time of the year for announcing one's albums of the year, as Rolling Stone has also released its list of the best 50 for 2013 (Music Times will publish its list December 21). SPIN also published its own list of best records this week, as we reported yesterday. Considering the number of albums released during the year, there was a decent amount shared, relatively, within the Top 5 of both publications. -

'Blurred Lines' Finally Passes 'Get Lucky' As The Best-Selling Single in the U.K. for 2013
There was a decent amount of arguing between Daft Punk fans and Robin Thicke fans about what was the unofficial "Song of The Summer:" Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" or Thicke's "Blurred Lines." Sales aren't technically an indicator of what song is actually better, but "Lines" has finally passed "Get Lucky" as the best-selling single of 2013 (in the U.K.). -
Taylor Swift, 2013 MTV VMAs Dancing & Reactions [SUPERCUT VIDEO]: Watch the Best Clips of Harry Styles' Ex-Girlfriend at Last Night's Awards Ceremony
Taylor Swift always makes an impression at awards ceremonies, whether she tears the roof down with a show-stopping performance or there is some sort of drama. Also, she dances and has pretty exaggerated reactions to performers that...
