    PJ Harvey was selected as one of the holiday guest editors for the BBC Radio 4 program "Today" and just worked on a 3-hour-long segment that featured Julian Assange, Ralph Fiennes, journalist John Pilger, former Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams and Shaker Aamer, a former Guantanamo Bay detainee.
  • Pitbull, Ke$ha, Eminem and Rihanna end year atop Billboard Digital Downloads chart

    Music Times warned you that the final Digital Downloads' chart of the year would be chalk full of sales thanks to people cashing in on the iTunes/download cards they received for Christmas. And sure enough, it was a huge week. Every song in the Top 50 saw a sales increase, and 46 of those tracks saw rises of more than 100 percent (aka doubling in sales since last week).

    Last week was the last for musicians to make a statement on the charts for 2013, and at least four albums left a mark during the closing moments of the year. Let's start with the notable accomplishers.
  • Calvin Harris, Tiësto, David Guetta among highest paid DJ's of 2013

    The increasing profitability of EDM has been a theme throughout the year in both Music Times as well as numerous financial publications. Many businessmen and promoters are looking to make a buck off the trend, but one the producers themselves are definitely cashing in, as Forbes' list of the highest paid DJ's indicates. Calvin Johnson topped the list for 2013, bringing in more than $46 million (a total that topped Jay Z's earnings for the year).
  • Diddy expanding alcohol empire with DeLeón tequila

    Sean "Diddy" Combs is entering the tequila market in a new partnership with high-end DeLeón Tequila, which was founded by Brent Hocking in 2008 and entered the U.S. market on May 5, 2009 and became an award-winning brand.
  • Vampire Weekend 'Step' remix features Danny Brown, Despot and Heems boasting about love [LISTEN]

    New year, new spins on old songs. Like so many other artists (such as Lady Gaga and Rick Ross), indie rock mainstays Vampire Weekend celebrated the end of 2013 with a remix of one of its latest songs: "Step." Never a band particularly afraid of blending with hip-hop, the "wintertime remix" of "Step" features up-and-coming rappers Danny Brown, Heems and Despot.
  • The Kinks 'as close as it's ever been' according to Ray Davies

    This year will bring the 50th anniversary of Kinks, the debut record of The Kinks, and the Davies brothers are kinda-pretty-sure that something will happen to mark the occasion. We add the extra adverbs because nothing official has been suggested yet, but both Davies seem pretty warm to the idea.

    Tension has been high this year between Drake and Kendrick Lamar after the infamous "Control" verse rocked the hip-hop world. Without any real face-to-face conflict, we've seen Drake express his feelings on Lamar with mostly passive aggressive statements. Now, in response to an interview with Vibe Magazine, Drake has actually given Lamar some props on his debut album.
  • High number of drug-related arrests at Phish's Madison Square Garden concerts

    The four-day Phish shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City had over 228 summons or arrests. According to the Manhattan district attorney's office, many of the arrests were misdemeanors. However, 10 felony charges have been documented for the attempted sale of drugs to police officers working undercover.
  • Rick Ross Freestyles over Kanye West 'Bound 2', name checks the Kardashains [LISTEN]

    It's a busy week for Maybach Music head Rick Ross. Not only is the notorious rapper allowed to keep his stage name under the First Amendment, but he also took on one of 2013's biggest rap hits in a new freestyle. Yesterday (Jan. 1), Ross dropped his take on "Bound 2."
