If there is anyone who can be considered an authority on Auto-Tune, it is T-Pain, who basically built his entire career around the notorious pitch-correction software. In an interview with The Huffington Post, T-Pain explains the way in which he uses Auto-Tune, and how most people, specifically Kanye West, do not use it correctly.

"Kanye uses it, but he doesn't use it correctly," T-Pain said of the rapper, who recorded the vocals on his fourth album 808s & Heartbreak entirely with Auto-Tune. "He makes great music with it, but the way that I use it and the way that I've shown Chris [Brown] and Jamie [Foxx] to use it, he doesn't use it that way."

When discussing exactly where Kanye goes wrong in his use of the software, T-Pain explains, "He sings without it first, and then he puts it on it ... you don't know how it's going to come out. You can't catch your mistakes before that happens. Sometimes he gets a little wobbly and things like that."

When 808s & Heartbreak is brought up, however, T-Pain admits the album is "pretty good," though this is because he "had a lot to do with that album," as he was the one who taught Kanye how to use Auto-Tune.

"When people hear Auto-Tune, they know that it's used so much for a crutch," T-Pain explains about the signature element of his music. "I use it to turn my voice into an instrument. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of guys that use Auto-Tune that cannot sing."
