Social media was shaken by a rumor last night that Zayn Malik was returning to One Direction and essentially nullifying the biggest music news of the year. Some fans allegedly noticed that a profile for the former member of the pop band had reappeared on Direction's website...perhaps implying that Malik would be back soon.

Didi it happen, and if so, was it just a careless mistake? No idea...the band hasn't made any announcements regarding the rumor, and they'd be less than likely to comment on the issue if it were truly an error. That said, the official announcement that Malik had left One Direction was pulled down from the band's Facebook page as well over the weekend.

A minor uproar occurred on Twitter as Directioners desperately sought out confirmation that the band was getting back together in its original form. Despite the bad blood generated between the factions of Malik and Louis Tomlinson fans over the pair's Twitter war-of-words following the exit, it seems most are willing to accept his comeback. Conversation quickly spiraled out of control, with some fans suggesting that Malik's profile had never left the site and Malik's "vacation" was all a plot to drive record sales (although, try as we might, we didn't find any suggestion of a "Zayn is dead" scenario).

The most legitimate source we could find, Hollywood Life, as usual relied on anonymous sources for their exclusive scoop. That said, even the unknown insider claimed that the rumor was bogus.

"Zayn is a little miffed that everyone believes he's going to end up back with 1D," they said. "The speculation bothers him. He left the group because he couldn't handle the high-profile that came with the band in the end, and he wants to get away from all that."

Sorry, Directioners. Maybe soon.
