Ex Red Hot Chili Peppers member John Frusciante has said in the past that he no longer intends to release music for monetary gain, as well as claiming that "I have no audience." In a nod to these comments on his status as a musician, he has no released a bevy of free music onto his Soundcloud and Bandcamp pages all streaming and free of charge in a stand against commercializing music.

Following up on the interview that he gave to Consequence of Sound earlier this year, Frusciante has also written an extensive open letter where he explains his decision to put the music out for free on a public domain.

"Giving people music for free online being so common these days is a good reminder that artistic expression is always a matter of giving, not taking, or selling," he wrote. "Selling is the making money part. They are distinct from one another, and it is my conviction that music should always be made because one loves music, regardless of whether one plans on selling it or not."

Frusciante also announced his self-titled album Trickfinger earlier this year, which was released Apr. 7 via Acid Test and shared the first track "After Below" on his Soundcloud, also for free. On Trickfinger he was experimenting with acid house and had reportedly been working on it since 2007. He noted that in 2007 was when he began learning how to program all the instruments into electronic production software.

Frusciante left the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2009 and has released 2 solo albums since then, namely 2014's Enclosure and 2015's Trickfinger. In his long spanning career he has released a record 13 solo albums overall.
