Since making a name for herself in the mainstream realm, Nicki Minaj has established a cult-like following and she has the record sells to prove it, but there are still some who question her lyrical skills. Minaj hopped on social media to fire back at her critics after recently revealing plans for a new mixtape.

The discussion of Minaj’s rapping abilities was first sparked when gossip site Bossip sent out a tweet, asking, “Why aren't there more mainstream female rappers?” Following their inquiry, the Twitter account for the site retweeted some opinions that the “Truffle Butter” rhymer found offensive, many of which discredited her success and suggested that her rise to stardom was not directly related to her musical talent.

Minaj responded with a series of tweets, noting that she has worked with artists including Jay Z, Eminem and Kanye West. She also sent out a message thanking her naysayers.

In a recently published Billboard cover story, Minaj shared her intentions to drop a new mixtape. "I’ll definitely drop a mixtape," she said. ”I have to."

She also reflected on her beginnings in the rap game and setting an example for other female rappers.

"And because I came into the game doing mixtapes, I want to make sure women do not forget the importance of that grind, that walk up to the top. You can’t get there with a song. Because once that song is no longer hot, you’re no longer hot. It’s important that you are bigger than your music. Some fans are going to f*ck with me for the rest of my life because they know where I came from. Fans know my struggle. How hungry I was. That I was not settling, I was not giving up. I was on everybody’s beat. I was ruthless."

No word on exactly when Nicki Minaj plans to release new music. Her last mixtape, Beam Me Up Scotty, was released in 2009. Check back with us for updates and let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
