In a new interview, Paul McCartney talked Oasis and said that comparing themselves to The Beatles in a 1996 MTV segment was “the kiss of death” for the up and coming band. The Oasis interview in 1996 was in regards to their two albums Definitely, Maybe and (What’s The Story) Morning Glory.

Noel Gallagher later admitted in the press that he was “high” when he gave that interview last year, according to NME.

“Oasis were young, fresh and writing good tunes,” McCartney said to Q. “I thought the biggest mistake they made was when they said ‘We’re going to be bigger than The Beatles.’ I thought, ‘So many people have said that, and it’s the kiss of death.’ Be bigger than The Beatles, but don’t say it. The minute you say it, everything you do from then on is going to be looked at in light of that statement.”

McCartney further expressed his love for traveling on the subway as himself, saying, “The thing about the Underground is that nobody looks at anyone. If I do get somebody saying ‘Are you Paul McCartney?,’ I say ‘Are you kidding? Do you think he’d get on the Underground?’ And then they go ‘Oh yeah, I suppose you’re right.”

In other McCartney news, he is adding more dates to his One on One Tour, which includes dates in Buenos Aires, Paris, Madrid, Berlin, Prague, Philadelphia and Boston. His tour has been going since 2016 and he was one of the biggest name headliners of the Desert Trip 2016 Festival line-up.

McCartney additionally has a new solo compilation album entitled Pure McCartney that is slated to drop June 10.
