The King of Pop is coming to Broadway. A Michael Jackson musical, featuring some of the late singer's greatest hits, is currently in the works!

Michael Jackson: The Broadway Musical

The estate of Michael Jackson announced on Tuesday, June 19, that they are developing a stage production inspired by the life of the world-renowned singer-songwriter. The project is being developed with Columbia Live Stage, which is also responsible for the stage adaptation of Groundhog Day (opened in 2017).

A title is yet to be revealed, but the planned musical is set to debut on Broadway in 2020.

Lynn Nottage has signed up to pen the book. The renowned playwright and professor has won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice: the first time was for Ruined in 2009 and then for Sweat last year.

Meanwhile, Christopher Wheeldon will direct and choreograph the show. The Tony Award winner is also known as an artistic associate at the Royal Ballet in London.

Needless to say, the story of Jackson is in very good hands.

Variety notes that the upcoming musical will draw from the extensive catalog of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. Fans can expect to hear songs such as "Thriller," "Smooth Criminal," "Beat It," and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough."

It is unclear, however, whether the production will also explore the controversial events in the life of the late music icon, including his trial and acquittal from child sexual abuse in 2005.

Michael Jackson On Stage And Screens

This is not the first time that Jackson's life and career have been the subject of a stage, television, or big-screen production. His estate has also previously collaborated with Cirque du Soleil to bring Michael Jackson ONE, an acrobatic show in Las Vegas that has been running for five successful years.

Thriller Live is a long-running stage production in London's West End celebrates the music of Jackson and The Jackson 5.

Michael Jackson's This Is It, a documentary that chronicles the preparations behind the multiple Grammy-winning singer's sold-out shows in London, was released a few months after his shocking death in 2009. It featured interviews and footage from rehearsals and backstage of the series of concerts.

Jukebox musicals have been very popular in the past few years. On Broadway, there are plenty of shows currently running, including Beautiful: The Carole King Musical that stars Supergirl's Melissa Benoist, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, and Escape to Margaritaville.
