Lady Gaga's third studio album "ARTPOP" came out nine years ago and many fans are celebrating its anniversary online. Despite the record's criticism, many supporters stood by the pop star during the dark moment of her career; take a look back at the pop star's experimental album.

Released via Streamline and Interscope Records, the Grammy Award-winning songwriter had planned and started working on the album in 2011 right after releasing "Born This Way."

She continued working on the project until she went on tour in 2013 and got injured while touring.

Describing the meaning of the album, the pop star, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, said the record is a "celebration and a poetic musical journey."

Some of the collaborators she worked with are Zedd, Madeon, and DJ Whiteshadow. Fans can hear mostly EDM and experimental sound on the record with hints of R&B, techno, electro-pop, and more.

ARTPOP's Inspiration

In an interview with "On Air With Ryan Seacrest," the Oscar Award-winning singer said she exerted all her effort into making the album while she was on a six-month hiatus due to the injury she sustained during the "Born This Way Ball Tour."

"ARTPOP is a celebration and a poetic musical journey through my friends and I hanging out and enjoying being pop stars," she said.

Initially, Gaga considered "Popart" as the title for her album, but she questioned the "cultural implication of the words." She later thought of juggling the word and eventually settled with "ARTPOP" as it has a nice ring to it.

Is 'ARTPOP: Act II' Getting Released Soon?

In 2012, Lady Gaga thought of splitting the record in half by adding a second volume to the first album.

The following year, she told fans that she still got many songs for the second installment and teased Little Monsters that it could possibly drop after touring.

However, many were disappointed as Act II never saw the light of day.

Just last year, Gaga's longtime collaborator, DJ White Shadow, teased fans at an "ARTPOP" party in Chicago, saying "And if I could ever do anything for any of you, including making a second version of this album..."

Despite the hopes of fans, Lady Gaga has not publicly announced when she will release the highly-anticipated second album for "ARTPOP."
