Many would think that it's about time Brian May was knighted, after many years of his outstanding contribution in music and frequent appearances on official royal occasions.

The Queen guitarist was knighted by King Charles III, along with thousands of other individuals. This was part of the King's first New Year Honours list.

The 75-year-old musician took to Instagram to share his heartfelt thanks for the prestigious and highly-coveted honor: "I'm very thrilled and very touched by the love that's come from you and the support,

"I will do my very best to be worthy. For now, good night and thank you and much love, from Sir Bri."

The video he posted was captioned: "Cheers all! Sir Bri. OK... If you want to be formal ... Dr Sir Brian Harold May, CBE. Bri."

According to reports, while May can now be referred to as Sir Brian May, his wife, Anita Dobson, can also enjoy her very own title: Lady May.

In an interview with the Associated Press, the musician reflected on his title and the honor that came with it: "I do a lot in that area now, which I think is in its way a great service to mankind,"

"I give them stereoscopy and they give me the chance to play in nice observatories all around the world, you know - but also the animals."

World-Reknowned and Highly Praised

The reigning monarch of England has the sole right of conferring the titles of honor and bestowing it upon people who are deemed worthy of it.

The royal family's website reads: "As 'fountain of honour' in the UK, The Queen has the sole right of conferring titles of honour on deserving people from all walks of life, in public recognition of their merit, service or bravery."

Reports note that during the late Queen Elizabeth II's reign, she released the Honours List twice a year, first on New Year's day and the second is on her "official birthday," held in June.

This New Year Honours List is the current reigning monarch, King Charles III's first Honours List since he succeeded the throne after the death of Queen Elizabeth III in September.

Aside from being a musician, May also happens to be an astrophysicist. He studied physics and mathematics at Imperial College London.

Just like his music career, May is quite successful in this field as well. He co-founded Asteroid Day with Rusty Schweickart of Apollo 9, which is a global awareness campaign for people to learn about asteroids.
