It had been six years since the singer had recorded solo work prior to the release of her breakthrough single in October of last year. The song served as the lead single from the soundtrack album for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and was an homage to the late Chadwick Boseman.

"Raise Me Up" received mixed reviews from critics, but was a major hit with fans and reached at No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. In a press release and an interview with InStyle, the songwriter Tems discussed collaborating with Rihanna on the song.

"Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honor," she said.

The performer then elaborated on the song's topics and the intentions behind the effort.

"I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I've lost in my life. I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them," she added.

Ryan Coogler, who also contributed on the song, released a statement via CBS News stating that the project's creative team tried to produce a worthy homage to Boseman, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 43. It was a privilege to collaborate with these extraordinary artists to compose a song for our film and for our friend, he said.

In January of this year, it was revealed that Raise Me Up has been nominated for the Oscar Award for Best Original Song. Lady Gaga and David Byrne are further performers that have been nominated for the honor.
