  • 8 Classic Album Titles Taken from Song Lyrics: Nirvana, Pink Floyd, and more

Many of the greatest albums of all time have title tracks on them, or songs that the album is named after (London Calling, Highway 61 Revisited, etc.), but an even more interesting trend is naming the album after lyrics, rather than one of the songs. Here are eight classic albums that took their titles from the lyrics.
  • 8 Musicians Who Switched Their Instruments: Paul McCartney, Joey Ramone, and more

It's not uncommon for members of a band to switch around the instruments they play every once in a while, but what is uncommon is for someone to permanently take up a different instrument than the one they originally played. Here are eight musicians who changed the instrument they played for their band.
  • 8 Incredible Alt-Rock Instrumental Songs: Radiohead, R.E.M., and more

Well-written lyrics can make a great song even better, but there are a ton of songs that work perfectly without any words at all, even from bands that don't normally write instrumentals. Here are eight incredible instrumental songs from alt-rock bands.
  • INTERVIEW: Midnight Faces ready to take alternative world by storm with synth-y sophomore album 'The Fire Is Gone'

To make a big-sounding indie rock record, you don't need any real frills: just ask California band Midnight Faces, comprised of vocalist Philip Stancil and composer Mattew Doty (also of Saxon Shore with Josh Tillman, a.k.a. Father John Misty). Tomorrow (May 13), the duo will drop its second full-length album The Fire Is Gone, an eight-song adventure through atmospheric synth pop, but before that, they're just trying to get established in California.

  • 6 Artists With a Running Theme In Their Album Covers: The Smiths, Iron Maiden, and more

Though artists are constantly morphing and experimenting, many like to keep a consistent theme running through their music and visual aesthetic. These six artists took this idea of visual consistency to heart, creating album covers that immediately identify an album as one of theirs.
  • 7 Amazing Alternative Musicians Who Are Mothers: Patti Smith, Liz Phair, and more

Happy Mother's Day! In honor of all of the awesome moms being celebrated today, here are seven moms who just so happen to be amazing alt-rock musicians as well.
  • 8 Albums That Open with Their Best Song: Frank Zappa, Black Sabbath, and more

The tracklisting for an album can make or break the listener's opinion of it. If an album doesn't open powerfully enough, the listener might not even make it through the rest of the songs. These eight albums got around this problem by placing the best song right at the top.
  • 5 Artists with Unexpected Senses of Humor: Jeff Buckley, Nirvana, and more

Plenty of artists play types of music that allow room for humor and silliness. Because the Beatles wrote light, fun songs, it wasn't so surprising when they would joke around in interviews and make hilarious movies like A Hard Day's Night. However, some artists project such a solemn image through their music that it's hard to imagine them ever laughing about anything, such as these five artists.
  • 6 Artists Whose Debut Songs Were Their Best: The B-52's, Black Flag, and more

It's not uncommon for an artist's debut album to be its best work, but some artists have debut singles that are so unequivocally excellent that they never again write anything that good. Here are six artists who's debut song was their best.
  • 8 Bands to Check Out If You Love 'The Blue Album': The Promise Ring, the Apples in Stereo, and more

Today is the 20th anniversary of the release of Weezer's debut album, known as "The Blue Album" by pretty much everybody, and it remains Weezer's most successful and best-loved album. If you've heard "The Blue Album" and love it as much as I do (which is as much a person can love an album without marrying it), you'd probably enjoy these eight bands a whole lot, too.
