  • Alex Winter Helming Ambitious Frank Zappa Documentary with Estate's Approval

Musical documentaries on characters such as Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse have been all the rage this year, and now an ambitious project revolving around the life of Frank Zappa has been announced. The film, approved by the Zappa Family Trust, won't be expected to hit theaters until 2017, but that's because of the huge level of material that filmmakers Alex Winter and Glen Zipper will have to work with.
  • Teenager Unearths Photo Strip from First Nirvana Concert

Nirvana played its first concert ever in March of 1987 and 28 years later, photos of the basement gig have been unearthed by an unlikely source, 19-year-old Maggie Poukkula, the daughter of Seattle musician Tony Poukkula of Laytem. Poukkula grew up with and had a history of jamming alongside Kurt Cobain, hosting the cellar concert in his very own home.
  • Kurt Cobain, The Beatles and Michael Jackson: Bad Musician Statues

A humorous petition has suggested that Outkast's Andre 3000 and Big Boi be carved into Georgia's historic Stone Mountain, a monument near Atlanta that's drawn controversy for its homage to the Confederacy in the form of Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson in Mt. Rushmore-style. Our official stance at Music Times is that the ATLiens riding in a Cadillac on the side of the mountain wouldn't hurt. And, even if it does border on the absurd, it wouldn't be the worst statue of a musician to be erected. Alas, The Beatles, Kurt Cobain and Michael Jackson (especially Michael Jackson) have been subjected to attempted memorials that fall way short of tastefulness.

Amy Winehouse is the name behind the second most-hyped documentary of the year thus far, and it paid off, creating the largest homeland opening weekend for a British documentary in history (the most-hyped doc has to be 'Montage of Heck,' the recently released film on Kurt Cobain). 'Amy,' directed by Asif Kapadia, brought in more than $800,000 in the UK. Good reviews and an expansion from 133 theaters to 200 will keep that number rising.

It's been a whirlwind of emotions for all-things-Nirvana, from the praise of documentary 'Montage of Heck,' the tribulations that came with conspiracy film 'Soaked in Bleach,' hints of re-opening Kurt Cobain's murder case and the ability to rent his and Courtney Love's former apartment on Airbnb.
