  • Liberation Music, label for Phoenix, legally threatens Harvard Law professor; surprisingly loses

The first lesson in this story is that you should avoid engaging in lawsuits with professors from the Harvard School of Law. Many a recent President has graduated from that particular program, and with good reason. They know more about legal proceedings than we do. Liberation Music, the label for French alt-rockers Phoenix, did not take this into consideration, and is now paying for it.

  • Nicole Oran's 2013 Playlist: Jay Z, Daft Punk and Savages

Music Times, like so many other music publications, was looking to publish a "Best of 2013" playlist. We met to discuss what such a playlist should include, and that's where we ran into trouble. We couldn't agree. Sometimes two of us just couldn't agree on whether the performer was amazing or terrible, and even when we agreed they were amazing, we couldn't agree on what track was most representative of their work. Hence it was decided that rather than try to agree (a seemingly impossible endeavor), everyone would get their own "favorites of 2013" playlist. We won't argue that these are necessarily the best tracks of the last year, but they're definitely songs that caught our respective attention and caused us to hit 'repeat" over and over and over again.
  • Disclosure, Chvrches, other alternative acts top Hype Machine's 'Most Blogged' list

If you roll your eyes at the term "blogosphere," at least acknowledge the truth the music world on the internet is vastly different from real-life music. The most telling example is Hype Machine's yearly 'Music Blog Zeitgeist,' which counts down the Top 50 performers based on how often they're mentioned in over 820 prominent music blogs. Hint: Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Eminem, Jay Z and Katy Perry didn't make the list.
  • Queens of the Stone Age reveal favorite albums of 2013, featuring Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, Phoenix and more

Everyone's releasing their year-end lists as 2013 comes to a close. Major publications such as Rolling Stone and Spin have unveiled their choice picks for album's of the year, but who's to say they're the only ones who have their say? What about the artists themselves? Rockers Queens of the Stone Age, who released "...Like Clockwork" in June have now revealed their picks for the best 10 albums of the year.
