Joe Blunt, popularly known as one of the former members of The Drifters and a legend in the world of R&B music, has passed away at the age of 74.

According to WUSA9, the musician died at his home in Temple Hills, MD. As of this writing, his family has yet to issue an official statement about his passing; his cause of death has not been publicized.

The musician was survived by his wife, Paula, and children, Darren, Joshua, and Bryan.

The Drifters frequently rotated lineups, and Blunt joined the group in 1976, after the most famous Drifters song had hit the charts. Songs like "Under the Boardwalk," "Save the Last Dance for Me," "This Magic Moment," and the periennial favorite doo wop version of "White Christmas" became part of the fabric of American culture. But as one of the lead singers of The Drifters, alongside bandmates like Ben E. King and Johnny Moore, Blunt kept this musical tradition alive.

But before he was part of this legendary group, Blunt was a young student who aspired to be a professional singer one day. His dream came true when he struck a deal with Cap City Records, and initially joined the group The Chancellors in 1967

During the Drifters' prime years in the music industry, they amassed massive success from fans, especially in England, as they dominated the charts and held several concerts.

Since he contributed a lot to the R&B music scene, Blunt was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by Sony Music. In addition, he received a Gold Disc after working on his band's compilation record, The Drifters: The Very Best Of.
