UPDATE: Due to overwhelming demand, Ricky Ian Gordon's poolside Orpheus and Eurydice is returning for three encore performances on December 19, 20 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. Please note that these performances will take place at the Welles Park Pool in Chicago's Lincoln Square, 2333 W. Sunnyside Ave, not at the Eckhart Park Pool. Admission is free. Walk-up tickets are available at 5:00 p.m. prior to each performance. It's not too surprising that the myth of Orpheus, whose music has the power to charm all living things, has been extremely popular with composers. Of course, there's the Gluck opera Orfeo ed Euridice. Then, there's Offenbach's opéra bouffon, Orpheus in the Underworld. There is even Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus by the Vince Guaraldi Trio.

And now, Chicago Opera Theater will present a new, truly aquatic version of Orpheus and Euridice, a song cycle by Ricky Ian Gordon.
