It's not much of a secret that Katie Couric has been angling to find her way back to network news. She left Today back in 2006 for seemingly greener pastures at CBS. That didn't last for long, and then Couric did two seasons of her own talk show for ABC. She's currently working for Yahoo, but the desire to reach the kind of audience that she once did remains strong. Since Andy Lack has been confirmed to have inked a deal to return to head up NBC News there have been rumors that he might want to bring Couric with him.

She originally worked with Lack to help bring Today to the top of the morning show ratings. Couric and Matt Lauer were like lightening in a bottle for years, with no other network coming close to touching them in the morning show ratings. According to a report by Page Six, burning bridges might be the thing that ultimately prevents Couric from stopping by even on occasion on Today. "The truth is she isn't welcome back at Today. There's still a lot of people at the show who worked with her back in the day, and she wasn't very nice to work with, especially toward the end." explains an insider.

Even if Lack was initially viewing Couric as a bit of a secret weapon, Savannah Guthrie just inked a new three year deal with the network and the Today audience seems to really like her. Pulling her from the roster would no doubt lead to backlash. There was a minute of talk about Couric possibly replacing the scandal-plagued Brian Williams, but since he is also good friends with Lack it's probably now an unlikely move.

Would you rather see Couric back at NBC rather than having to seek out her reporting online? Should Lack consider bringing her back into the fold? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!
