Serato is known for making some of the most popular professional DJ mixing software on the market. At the upper end of the market, there are few companies that compare, but now Serato is looking to use its expertise to try and allow regular people to have a well-mixed playlist for their get-togethers. It has unveiled a new app called Pyro, which allows users to create playlists where the songs will fade into one another automatically. It is like a very basic DJ on your phone.

It sounds simple and is exactly that. Users can upload playlists to the app either from existing libraries in their phone and use those in Pyro. Users can also combine multiple playlists at once as well. From there the app will fade songs in and out as they transition from one song to the next. It is easy to re-order songs by dragging and dropping them into order, even changing the top song with a slow transition into the new one on the fly. If you have a paid Spotify account, Pyro will switch over to recommended songs once your playlist ends.

Some may think this will replace the work of the hard-working average house party or bar DJ, but AJ Bertenshaw, Serato's CEO and co-founder refutes that point strongly.

"If you think this is taking the job of a DJ, then you don't really know what a DJ does," he told The Verge.

This is designed to be simple and it is. The app is free for IOS, iPad and Apple Watch, but it does include some in app purchases that give it more functionality or the ability to collaborate on playlists with other phones.

An android app is expected at some point in the future.
