From being a hip-hop artist to becoming one of the most prominent hip-hop commentators today, Joe Budden has had a fair share of statements in the media that lasted a little too long in the sphere to become a tidbit that is being shared all around.
One of these claims was that Jay-Z charged him $250,000 for a verse, which, back in 2003, was a "wild" amount already for someone who was still starting.
How Much Does Jay-Z Charge Per Verse?
In a shocking revelation last July 2022 on the Flip Da Script podcast, Budden claimed that Jay-Z charged him a whopping amount of $250,000 for a verse on "Pump It Up."
According to Budden, who was still a budding artist back then, Hov's price was "too steep" for him. But per the commentator, he did not feel any "strong emotions" about the price; in fact, he was humbled that Jay-Z, a Hip-hop titan, would even consider giving him a verse.
"I don't think it was a big number. I think that was his number. It was just big in my world, but it wasn't a big number ... Listen, I'm super young in that moment. I wasn't in the studio when they [Jay and Budden's A&R, Skane] had the conversation," he said at the time.
However, when the news hit out back then, Jay-Z responded in the most hip-hop way possible - a diss track using the same song's beat.
Now, in a recent episode of the Drink Champs podcast, Budden confirms that the $250,000 Jay-Z price was, in fact, a rumor.
"I didn't personally ask him. I couldn't personally speak to him," he admitted. He also pointed out that it was only his A&R Skane and Jay-Z who were in the room who talked about the figure.

Jay-Z is Not Charging For A Verse Anymore
As of this writing, it is still not clear how much Jay-Z actually charges for a verse. However, in an interview with Kevin Hart in 2022, Hov claimed that he is not charging fees anymore.
Instead, he only collaborates with those with who he has a good relationship with only.
