Shakira is perhaps one of the most successful Latina artists in the world. Thanks to her impact on Latin music, her boundary-crossing music, and her contribution to the music industry in general, she has cemented her page on pop culture history.

Shakira Earns Her MTV Video Vanguard Award

After performing a medley of her hits including "She Wolf," "Te Felicito," "TQG," "Objection," "Ojos Asi," "Whenever Wherever," and "Hips Don't Lie."

After her performance, she went on to receive the prestigious award, presented by Wyclef Jean. Notably, the two collaborated on "Hips Don't Lie."

"Thank you MTV. Thank you for being such a big part of my career since I was only 18 years old," she went on to say before giving her kids a shout-out. "I want to share this award with my fans who always support me through thick and thin. Thank you so much for being my army and helping me fight all my battles."

She also spoke in Spanish, which translates to: "This is for you my people, my Latin American people inside and outside this country. Thank you for inspiring me and for injecting me with so much energy to keep moving forward."

She has undoubtedly inspired a generation of Latin artists as the genre takes over the globe, including Karol G and Anitta.

At the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, Shakira and Anitta spoke highly of her and her impact on them.

Karol G, Anitta Raved About Shakira's Impact

Asked about what impact Shakira had on her, Anitta expressed during the MTV VMAs Pre-show: "I think for all of us Latinos... Shakira for us was a big, big influence in dance - the dance moves - and to make us believe it was possible being a Latina and getting here and showing our culture... I think she's an icon and she deserves even more."

As for Karol G, they surprisingly won the VMA for Best Collaboration on their Spanish song "TQG."

Visibly shocked by the award, Shakira gave a shoutout to their hometowns and Colombia in their shared acceptance speech.

Karol G also had this to say in Spanish as loosely translated by Hola in English: "If collaborating with the legendary Shakira had been impressive, having an award with her is something from another planet. Thank you everybody I love you!"
