Coachella Sells Out General Admission Passes in 39 Minutes, Breaking Own Record for Absurd Ticket Moving Time
Yesterday we reported on the theoretical "battle" between Coachella and Governors Ball—the two festivals announced their respective lineups less than a day apart from each other—in terms of lineups but it's clear which still has the most fan appeal. Coachella put tickets up for sale the same day as its lineup announcement and both weekends for the event sold out within 40 minutes, setting a record for the event that typically unloads all of its passes in stupid amounts of time anyhow. -
Taylor Swift Tops Albums Chart with '1989' But Comes Up Short of Usher's Record; 'Guardians of The Galaxy' Leads Soundtrack Charge
Taylor Swift may have topped the Albums Sales Charts for the eighth time but her "low" week of 172,000 copies sold means that 1989 will not catch Usher's streak of 200,000-plus sales weeks that he set with Confessions during 2004. -

Sienna Miller Replacing Emma Stone as Sally Bowles for Concluding Run of 'Cabaret' on Broadway
Cabaret has become a revolving door for the stars on Broadway as the last year has seen a decent number of actresses and vocalists handle the role of Sally Bowles, made popular by Liza Minnelli in the 1972 film of the same name. Emma Stone recently announced that she'd be holding onto the role for two weeks past her original contract and former Destiny's Child vocalist Michelle Williams was in the role before that, but reports from Billboard indicate that the next woman to take the role will be Sienna Miller. -
Eminem, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and Marvin Gaye Recordings Used for Illegal Prison Mixtapes...Universal Music Bringing Lawsuit
No good deed goes unpunished. Or at least no profitable act disguised as a good deed goes unpunished. The Centric Group and Keefe Groups, two of several such institutions cited by Billboard, have been selling "care packages" to families of incarcerated individuals, which can include music mixtapes as part of their appeal. Universal Music is calling these agencies out on it in a new lawsuit, alleging that selling these mixtapes for profit doesn't constitute fair use and the record is owed legal restitution. Among the acts represented on the tapes are Eminem, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and Marvin Gaye. -
5 Albums That Should Get The 192 kHz Treatment at PonoMusic: Kanye West, Arcade Fire (and Some Underrated Neil Young)
The PonoMusic sales catalogue is up but make sure to check what quality audio you're getting for certain records. Many are available for download but don't actually feature an audio quality any higher than a typical compact disc. Music Times has found a shortlist of albums available at 44.1 kHz that we'd love to see get the full 192 kHz treatment. -
Coachella 2015 VS Governors Ball 2015: Music Times Veers Between AC/DC, Deadmau5, East and West Coast for Festival Season
Is there any reason to compare the Coachella 2015 and Governors Ball 2015 lineups? Not really...they're months and thousands of miles apart. They're not competing for attendees. Yet we can't help but feel the two were locked in a battle for best lineup after releasing their respective offerings only a day apart. We compare and declare a victor. -
Taylor Swift and '1989' Take Eighth Billboard 200 No. 1 Spot; Nicki Minaj Remains No. 2, 'Into The Woods' Soundtrack Gets Only Sales Increase
It's still cold out there for new music releases after the first full week of album sales during 2015, so it's not surprise that Taylor Swift was still on top of the Billboard 200 when today's numbers came out. It's the eighth week of ten that 1989 has been available where the record ended up on top, which makes it her second most-decorated album yet (Fearless spent 13 nonconsecutive weeks at no. 1 during 2008-'09). It moved 244,000 equivalent albums last week. -
New Slipknot Album Already Planned for 2015/2016? Jim Root and Mick Thomson Say Band Ready to Hit Studio Post-Tour
Slipknot fans had to wait more than six years between the release of All Hope Is Gone ands 2014's chart topping .5: The Gray Chapter but the next wait for music from the metal group may be much shorter. A recent interview with Music Radar found guitarists Jim Root and Mick Thomson suggesting that the band would like to get back into the studio as soon as its current tour lets up, meaning a new album could be ready as early as late 2015/early 2016. -
New Lead Belly Album Set from Smithsonian Features 15 Unreleased Performances Including 1947 Commentary on Queen Elizabeth's Wedding
Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter has a new compilation coming out later this year in the form of Smithsonian Folkways' Lead Belly: The Complete Collection. If one thing connects the traditionally black music forms of blues and hip-hop, it's that the performers of both tend to have huge back catalogues that ensure we'll never hear everything they've recorded. Thus the new five-disc collection will include 15 songs that never saw proper release, including a much-discussed narrative discussing Queen Elizabeth's 1947 wedding to Prince Philip. -
Monster Products Sue Beats By Dre for Allegedly Scamming Company Out of Potential $100 Million-Plus Payout from Apple Deal
Dr. Dre might be the hip-hop billionaire and his name might be on the product line Beats by Dre, but he's not actually capable of designing and building headphones all by himself. The original line of Beats headphones were produced by Monster, best known originally for its high-quality line of audio cables. Now that company and its CEO, Noel Lee, are suing the Beats Audio company for allegedly using shady dealings to cut Monster out of the equation conveniently before being bought up by Apple for a huge amount. -

40 Years of 'The Wiz': Music Times Chooses Five Classic Scenes from The Film Adaptation, Starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson
We're not Broadway people but we know a classic when we see it, and The Wiz is classic. The idea of adapting a cinematic masterpiece such as The Wizard of Oz into a new musical—set far from the rural lands of the original in the urban streets of New York City—could have fallen flat but William F. Brown's play was anything but. We hope that the musical gets a Broadway revival (the last attempt, during 2004, was abandoned) but until then the best way to check out The Wiz is via the 1978 film version starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Richard Pryor and more. We've whittled down a short list of our favorite scenes from that film to celebrate the play's 40th anniversary. -
Classic Music Artists Who Have Made The Jump to Children's Literature: Paul McCartney, Madonna, David Bowie and More
Danny Brown surprised us, or at least those familiar with his foul mouth, by revealing that he was in the process of writing a Dr. Seuss-style children's book aiming to encourage black girls to appreciate themselves while promoting self-esteem. The emcee is hardly the first established musician to try his hand at children's literature, although usually those handling the pen could also live off their royalties forever so they have time to experiment with new things. Here are seven of the biggest musicians in recent memory that have taken time from their career of performing for adults to wrote for kids.
