  • J. Cole, A Tribe Called Quest's Ali Shaheed Talk 'Be Free,' Kendrick Lamar and '2014 Forest Hills Drive'

    Fresh off the release of his third album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, J. Cole decided to give his first post-release interview with NPR. While that might seem like an odd choice, the segment he joined features Ali Shaheed (A Tribe Called Quest) and Frannie Kelley, a duo that consistently churns out impressive dialogues with hip-hop stars.

    Tonight marks the one-year anniversary of Beyoncé's surprise self-titled visual album. The release of those 14 songs and 17 companion videos changed the way artists go about conceptualizing the way they drop albums. Harvard even did a case study on the impact the album had on the industry and why it sold so many copies without prior promotion. Beyoncé is currently nominated for five Grammy Awards at the 2015 ceremony including Album of the Year. She was given the Video Vanguard Award at the 2014 VMAs and has won many other awards for the project. To celebrate the whirlwind year she's had, Queen Bey shared a new short film "Yours and Mine."

    The world is Sam Smith's. It's been a benchmark year for the singer-songwriter - he's had two top 10 singles with "Stay With Me" and "I'm Not The Only One," his album In The Lonely Hour has been deemed one of the year's best and (to cap it all off) he's been nominated for six Grammys. It seems as though he knows everything is at his feet, if the new music video for "Like I Can" is any indication.

    Make no mistake, Nicki Minaj is in charge. Today (Dec. 12), following a series of leaks from her new album The Pinkprint, Minaj teamed up with her Young Money cohorts Drake and Lil Wayne (as well as Chris Brown) to release a sexy, intense and bondage-themed music video for "Only."
  • AC/DC Going Big on UK Tour with Shows in Glasgow, Dublin and Wembley Stadium; Is Glastonbury A Possibility?

    AC/DC will be returning to the UK for the first time in five years and they don't plan on doing it in any small way. The hard rock heroes will play shows in Dublin, Glasgow and at London's go-to gig for massive concerts: Wembley Stadium. We can only imagine that all shows mentioned will feature cannons and the familiar array of showpieces from the band.
  • Ed Sheeran and Pharrell Williams Big Winners at BBC Music Awards; One Direction, Coldplay and More Perform

    Someone in the United States needs to talk to the BBC Music Awards on how to set up a music trophy show. The event, held Thursday night, featured the handing out of only four prizes, simplifying reporting and allowing viewers to avoid prizes that they don't have much interest in. Among the few winners, Ed Sheeran and Pharrell Williams received the most acclaim.

    Stop us if you've heard this one before (actually, don't): Vinyl sales are hot. The trend continued in the United States during 2014 as The Wall Street Journal reports that sales for the format were up 49 percent from 2013-a huge, huge increase-translating to roughly 8 million vinyl records sold during 2014. No one with an ear to the music industry will be surprised to know that Jack White, one of the format's biggest promoters, is at the top of individual vinyl sellers as his Lazaretto sold nearly 76,000 copies.
  • New American Music Prize Aims to Bring Mercury Prize-Style Competition (and Cash Payout) to U.S. Musicians

    Didn't find your favorite album of the year among the Grammy nominations last week? Never fear: If it's an American performer, they'll soon have the chance to take home a new award, The American Music Prize, which is even better in that it comes with a cash payout as well. Any album released between August 1 of 2014 and July 31st of 2015 will be considered.
  • Cam'ron Announces Retirement Following Next Album 'Purple Haze 2' [WATCH]

    In the caption to a video posted to his Instagram account yesterday, Dec. 10, Harlem rapper Cam'ron announced that his next studio album Purple Haze 2 will be his last. The video shows the 38-year-old rapper visiting the grave of his friend Huddy 6, who died in a car accident on the George Washington Bridge in 2010, with a caption mysteriously implying that Huddy spoke to him, saying that they have "other things to do."
