'Twas another good week for new album releases, as half of the Top 10 spots on this week's Billboard 200 were occupied by new names, and four of those debuts managed to land in the top five. -
Pharrell Williams to Serve as Ambassador for U.N. 'International Day of Happiness'
People of the world have very little in common as a whole. That makes it tough for the United Nations General Assembly to find anything to bring us all together, you know, that aren't wars or the Olympics. One trend has struck with equal enthusiasm across the planet however: "Happy" by Pharrell Williams. Hence the international law body has gotten Mr. Williams to serve as the ambassador for International Day of Happiness on March 20. -
Pharrell Williams and 'Happy' Dominate Digital Downloads Chart
The Billboard 200 was awash with debut albums this week, but things largely remained the same over on the Digital Downloads chart. Although every track in the Top 10 is the same as last week, there was some shuffling. -
Pharrell Williams and 'Happy' Top Digital Downloads Chart for Second Week
This week was pretty boring on the Digital Downloads charts, as the top five songs remained exactly the same as last week. Among those top five there was a huge divergence in those who gained versus those who lost however. -
Pharrell Williams 'Happy' to Top Digital Downloads Chart
Things are looking optimistic for America, as Pharrell Williams' track "Happy" rose to the top of the Billboard Digital Downloads chart last week (not that a song named "Sad" was ever at the top). Williams got a continued boost from radio play, Beats commercials, DVD sales of Despicable Me 2, The NBA All-Star Game...just about everything. The track jumped 31 percent in sales and moved 329,000. -

Back of The Billboards is a Music Times weekly segment that looks at the opposite end: the new record that finished closest to the back of the Billboard 200 for the previous week. We hope to give a fighting chance to the bands you haven't heard of. -
Katy Perry Rides 'Dark Horse' to Third Straight Week atop Digital Downloads Chart

Spotify Streams Way Up following Grammys for Daft Punk, more
Album and download sales are down. Everyone knows this. The number of viewers taking on the Grammys even year continues to rise however, most likely because they're on television, and the populace just can't handle things they can't see. Either way, musicians that are already pretty popular from a musical perspective see huge increases in activity following The Grammys' broadcast, at least according to numbers released by Spotify. -
For Better or Worse, Village Voice's Pazz+Jop Rank the Top Albums and Singles of 2013 [POLL]
While many argue the merits of the long-suffering publication as well as the results therein--hey, the lot of us feel the same way about the Grammys--the Voice's P+J issue (conceived of by disgraced music editor, Bob Xgau) is about as consensus as we're likely to get these days. -
