Tracy Chapman is experiencing a surge in streaming and in sales after her surprise performance of
"Fast Car" with Luke Combs at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Chapman's iconic song had a huge uptick in streaming ever since Sunday's performance, which makes it a huge win for her despite the song not winning at the 2024 ceremony.

Tracy Chapman Streaming, Sales Surge After Luke Combs Grammy Performance

According to Billboard, the original Tracy Chapman song "Fast Car" experienced a 241% spike in streaming, equalling 949,000 official on-demand U.S. streams.

However, the sales were more massive than the streaming surge. The publication reported that sales soared 38,400% from a negligible amount to nearly 14,000.

On the other hand, Combs' version also gained 37% in streaming and 3900% in sales. Billboard also suggests that if the song gains more momentum the song could re-enter the Hot 100, which would be an outstanding feat ever since its 1988 release.

Luke Combs' version of the song has since peaked at the No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and topped the US Country Airplay, US Hot Country Songs, and US Adult Top 40 charts. It has also been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

It won Single of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2023 CMA Awards, making Chapman the first Black songwriter, male or female, to win the CMA for Song of the Year in CMA history.

According to the singer, it was a "full circle moment" for him to be associated with Chapman in any way, playing that song ever since he knew how to play the guitar.

Luke Combs, Tracy Chapman 'Fast Car' Grammy Performance

As the two perform the song in front of a star-studded audience, Luke Combs seemed to be stuck in disbelief as he gazed at his idol singing one of the classics as they take turns on the verse.

Although Combs failed to take home the Grammy for Best Country Performance after losing it to Chris Stapleton's "White Horse," the experience seemed to be enough for him.

Likewise, everyone in the audience was thrilled to see the duo perform on stage. Taylor Swift was seen enjoying the song, War and Treaty pumping their fists in the air while Brandi Carlile and her wife Catherine held each other and swayed to the beat of the song.

On social media, fans were tearing up on Tracy Chapman's rare appearance and soulful performance. The last time Chapman performed it was in 2015, and the singer-songwriter has been elusive to the public since then.
