Ed Sheeran opened his own concert after Khalid was reportedly involved in a car accident; the latter did not sustain major injuries and might be returning onstage soon.

Fans were surprised to see Sheeran go onstage during what was supposed to be the opening segment of his "Mathematics Tour" in Meryland's FedEx Field last week.

The "Shape of You" singer announced that Khalid was not able to perform because he got into a car accident, "He's recovering, and we wish him the best."

"And I'm going to say this after every song because if people don't know who was going to be the opening act today, people are going to be walking in being like, 'This show isn't what I thought it was,'" he then continued.

Khalid Recovers from Car Accident

According to reports, Sheeran announced the change in the opening act on his Instagram Stories: "Unfortunately, Khalid was involved in a car accident and won't be able to make the DC show.

"Thankfully, he was not seriously hurt and he's taking the time needed to get better. We are all wishing him a speedy recovery and he genuinely appreciates all of you for the love and support."

As of this writing, there is not a lot of information regarding the "Young, Dumb and Broke" singer's health status. He has kept mum about the accident as well, however, Sheeran does add that Khalid will soon be ready to return onstage, so the accident might not be as serious as initially thought.

Ed Sheeran Opens His Own Show

Despite the sad news, Sheeran was quite enthusiastic and more than willing to open his own show.

The "Perfect" singer, who usually comes on stage later said, "Usually when I start playing it's like pitch black, and now I get to see everyone. It's awesome."

He performed several songs from his most recent album "Subtract," and reflected on the early days of his career as a musician.

"I used to open up for people a lot when I was like 16, 17, 18," the singer shared. "And it was in the time of MySpace. I used to have cards that I would give people: 'Check me out on MySpace, MySpace.com/EdSheeran.'"

As per Sheeran, Khalid will return as his opener for the next show, which will be held in Boston.
