  • The Beatles, Kraftwerk, Kris Kristofferson, more to be honored with Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award before Grammys

Seven musicians and performers will receive the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award the night before the Grammys during January. You may have heard of a few of them: The Isley Brothers, Kraftwerk, Kris Kristofferson, Clifton Chenier, Maud Powell, Armando Manzanero and...oh yeah...The Beatles.
  • Women We Love Wednesdays: Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae is not afraid to stand out. The 28-year-old firecracker always puts 110 percent (at least) into everything she does. From her first studio album The Archandroid to this year's The Electric Lady, Monae has managed to blend together science fiction, pop and old school R&B to create some of the most original, riveting music out there today. With albums full of complex music and fascinating lyrics that recall 1950s sci-fi, Monae hasn't just broken the musical mold, she's absolutely shattered it.
  • Florence Welch showed up onstage and crowdsurfed at Haim's sold out London show

Last night, audience members at the sold out Haim at London's Forum got a special treat when Florence and the Machine singer (Florence Welch) showed up, which is already cool just because she was there, and especially because she was wearing a Haim T-shirt with true support, but she ended up crowdsurfing.
  • Review: Kaiser Chiefs release new single 'Misery Company,' reveal full tracklisting for 'Education, Education, Education & War'

It's been quite the journey for Kaiser Chiefs. Last year, the "Ruby" band's drummer/head songwriter Nick Hodgson called it quits, leaving the future of the group as a big old question mark. However, the remaining members are still trucking along. Yesterday (Dec. 10), Kaiser Chiefs released the first track from its upcoming album Education, Education, Education & War "Misery Company," and the track rocks harder than anything from the British band to date.
  • Beastie Boys counter-sue GoldieBlox for 'Girls' copyright infringement

And the GoldieBlox vs. Beastie Boys saga continues. As previously reported, toy company GoldieBlox has been in a legal battle with The Beastie Boy's over the use of the song "Girls" in a parody advertisement. Now the Beastie Boys have officially counter-sued the feminist toy company for copyright infringement. A counter-claim filed yesterday in New York argues that the parody version of "Girls" doesn't fall under "fair use" as Goldieblox had claimed last month in a preemptive lawsuit.
  • Ariana Grande, Robin Thicke, Jennifer Hudson and more playing ABC's West Coast New Year's Eve bash

Kudos have to be given to ABC for keeping their New Year's Eve performance lineups secret as long as they do. It's less than three week until the big show at Times Square in New York City, and nothing has leaked yet. However, viewers on the West Coast now have access to a decent chunk of their own lineup for the Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2014.
  • James Murphy talks Despacio, LCD Soundsystem's live album and new music for 2014

James Murphy has been busy since disbanding LCD Soundsystem in 2011. In his Rolling Stone interview, he dropped hints about his future plans, including an LCD Soundsystem live album and the building of a new studio in New York, where he'll work on new material.
  • Fiona Apple, Vampire Weekend, Beck and Jim James share cover songs to bring the loving spirit for Valentine's Day on the Starbucks release 'Sweetheart 2014'

To preface a Valentine's Day abundant with love songs (yes, we're already jumping ahead on holidays as usual), on Feb, 4 Hear Music/Concord Music Group will release the compilation Sweetheart 2014, exclusively sold as a physical version at Starbucks, but it will also be available digitally. This edition features a ton of great musicians covering love-inducing tracks from other artists.
  • New mixtapes from Chance The Rapper emerge on Reddit, featuring Adele and Coldplay samples

Chance The Rapper is having a pretty good year. His Acid Rap mixtape has caught the attention music critics, and was even named the second best record of 2013 by SPIN magazine. Normally, the industry waits until late in a performer's career to dig up all the old B-Sides and release a boxed set, but some old mixtapes from Chance's past have emerged online this week.
  • Foo Fighters played an intimate show at a pizza joint outside of L.A. to kick off the upcoming show in Mexico City

After more than a year, following Dave Grohl's announcement of a hiatus in 2012, Foo Fighters are going to head to Mexico City to play on Dec. 13 at the 55,000-capacity Foro Sol stadium. The National will open for them. But earlier this week they decided to warm up and test out how tight the set was at a pizza place in the Los Angeles-area first.
  • Entertainment lawyer and former Napster COO Milton Olin Jr. remembered by family and friends; he died Sunday

Milton Olin Jr., former Napster COO and entertainment attorney for Altschul & Olin LLP, died Sunday after being hit by a sheriff's patrol car while riding a bicycle.
  • Pitbull and Ke$ha beat Eminem and Rihanna for Digital Downloads in slow sales week

For some odd reason, Christmas singles don't sell. Although the Billboard 200 was full of suddenly-popular CD's containing boatloads of "chestnuts," the Digital Downloads Top 10 didn't reflect the same. Which isn't to say that popular music downloads did particularly well either.
