  • RIAA Reports Streaming Service Revenues Brng in More Cash than CD Sales for First Time Ever; Digital Downloads Still Dominant

Music trends are often not as dramatic as we make them out to be. For example, the resurgence in vinyl still only accounts for 2 percent of all album sales...not exactly as earthshaking as coverage might suggest. Up until this point, streaming has somewhat been in the same boat, but a new report from the Recording Industry Association of America shows that during 2014, for the first time ever, revenues brought in from streaming accounted for more than the sales of CDs. Streaming services brought in $1.87 billion during 2014, compared to $1.85 billion for compact discs.
  • Spoon 'Austin City Limits' Gig Available for Streaming [WATCH]

Spoon had never taken a four-year break between albums before the gap between 2010's "Transference" and 2014's "They Want My Soul." Singer Britt Daniel and Co. recently taped an "Austin City Limits" gig that proved the group is back in the groove, but Daniel also explained why Spoon was gone for so long. "When we finished that last tour in November of 2011 — it was at some festival in Germany — we kind of just said, 'Well, that's the last show for awhile, and who knows what's going to happen,'" Daniel told "Entertainment Weekly." "And we were all a little ground down at that point. It had just been too long that we were touring that record. So we went our separate ways without really saying anything." After a few months of "getting a girlfriend" and lying low, Daniel decided to found the Divine Fits with Dan Boeckner. That project kept him going until Spoon were ready to record again last winter. Now, they have — another — critically acclaimed album and appear to be back in the flow of things. "I really feel like you can hear that variety on the record, and I feel like it ended up being a good thing," Daniel said. "The second batch [of] songs are a bit wilder. I think they're kind of wilder songs, to begin with, but the recordings of them are a little more out there, and I think that the record needed that." • Spotify Co-Founder Says Taylor Swift Could've Made $6M from Streaming

Taylor Swift pulled her catalogue from Spotify last week, which set off a nationwide debate over the music streaming service. "If I had streamed the new album, it's impossible to try to speculate what would have happened," Swift said. "But all I can say is that music is changing so quickly, and the landscape of the music industry itself is changing so quickly, that everything new, like Spotify, all feels to me a bit like a grand experiment. And I'm not willing to contribute my life's work to an experiment that I don't feel fairly compensates the writers, producers, artists and creators of this music. And I just don't agree with perpetuating the perception that music has no value and should be free." On Tuesday, Nov. 11, Spotify co-founder Daniel Elk offered a rebuttal and estimated that Swift would have made $6 million from Spotify streaming by the end of the year. His argument included "three myths," including "free music for fans means artists don't get paid." Elk believes that Spotify's free service leads to more premium subscribers, and therefore more cash for artists.
  • Adam Sandler Inks Four-Movie Deal With 'Netflix'

A few years ago it looked like Netflix was on the verge of extinction thanks to those big red boxes popping up all over the country, making renting movies easier and cheaper than ever. Instead of laying down and dying Netflix put on their collective thinking caps and realized that they would need to offer up something unique to reel consumers back in. They tested out some original programming and quickly realized that they were on to something. Series' like House of Cards proved that if Netflix offered quality original programs then people would invest in it. Given that fact it makes perfect sense that Adam Sandler would sign on for an exclusive four-movie deal.
  • Ed Sheeran Defends Spotify Because It Ultimately Helps Him To Play More Live Shows

Criticism over streaming music services like Spotify is really nothing new. A multitude of artists have come forward to complain about the royalties that are paid out for services such as these. There has been a lot of back and forth dialog over whether or not digital sales have actually cost artists cold, hard cash that used to come from fans buying good old CD's. Ed Sheeran is one artist that believes streaming services ultimately have helped him to do that thing that he loves most- play live.
