• 9 Solo Artists Who Are Better Than Their Bands

How many times have you been disappointed by a solo album from a member of one of your favorite bands? Sometimes they're outright bad, but even the good ones (Morrissey, Paul McCartney, etc.) simply can't compare to their old bands. However, these nine artists broke this trend, releasing solo albums that actually surpass the work of their old bands.
  • 'NSYNC Releases Surprise Album ... Sort Of

They may not be pulling a Beyoncé, exactly, but a new two-disc compilation from boy band superstars 'NSYNC was unexpectedly released today, titled The Essential 'NSYNC. In fact, this album release was so unexpected that not even Lance Bass knew about it, tweeting, "I love when the record label doesn't even tell you they are releasing a new 'NSYNC album tomorrow!"
  • Justin Timberlake, John Legend and Usher among Performers for Yahoo's Live Concert Series

Yahoo has released a full roster of performers that will be taking part in its upcoming live streaming concert series. For the time being, the deal between the web giant and Live Nation Entertainment will stream one live concert a day for 365 days to Yahoo users. The first will take place on July 15 when the Dave Matthews Band plays at Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville.
  • Justin Timberlake Takes Record for Most No. 1's by Solo Male

All indications suggest that when the numbers become official tomorrow morning, Justin Timberlake will be at no. 1 on the pop charts with his single "Not A Bad Thing," which moves up from the no. 2 spot. The song's arrival at the top spot marks the seventh time the performer has reached that peak, breaking a tie he had with Bruno Mars for the most no. 1's by a male solo act.
  • Iggy Azalea Runs Digital Downloads Chart

Iggy Azalea was the basis for a controversial headline from Forbes magazine this week ("Hip Hop is Run By A White, Blonde, Australian Woman"). That might be a totally inaccurate statement, but she is running the Digital Downloads charts at the moment.
  • SURPRISE: 'Happy' and Pharrell Williams Still on Top

WARNING: If you hate banality and environments where things never change, don't read the following summary of last week's Digital Downloads chart. The first five spots all remained exactly the same as last week. Exactly. The. Same.
  • Justin Timberlake, Nine Inch Nails, Miley Cyrus May be Without Finnish Venue

Russia's annexation of Crimea and the sanctions passed by the United States against some of its citizens as a result have finally come to where you, a strictly music news fan, cannot avoid them any longer. The ownership of a Finnish venue by several prominent Russian businessmen have forced the issue of whether American performers will be able to appear there, legally.
  • Taylor Swift Tops North American Concert Market during 2013

Billboard released its highest-earning tours list nearly a month ago, but the North American numbers might be more relevant to Music Times' American readers. Taylor Swift took the top spot in her home continent, followed by the worldwide no. 1, Jon Bon Jovi.
  • Bruno Mars and Rihanna Are 'Most Pirated' Performers of 2013

Looking at a performer's sales is one way to judge who's the biggest name in music. Another way is to check out who's been illegally downloaded the most. Data analysts Musicmetric have looked into the latter and concluded that Bruno Mars and Rihanna are the most tormented performers in the world. Where that places them among the most popular is up to you.
  • Nicole Oran's 2013 Playlist: Jay Z, Daft Punk and Savages

Music Times, like so many other music publications, was looking to publish a "Best of 2013" playlist. We met to discuss what such a playlist should include, and that's where we ran into trouble. We couldn't agree. Sometimes two of us just couldn't agree on whether the performer was amazing or terrible, and even when we agreed they were amazing, we couldn't agree on what track was most representative of their work. Hence it was decided that rather than try to agree (a seemingly impossible endeavor), everyone would get their own "favorites of 2013" playlist. We won't argue that these are necessarily the best tracks of the last year, but they're definitely songs that caught our respective attention and caused us to hit 'repeat" over and over and over again.
  • Disclosure and Chvrches Received Most Blog Mentions During 2013

If you roll your eyes at the term "blogosphere," at least acknowledge the truth the music world on the internet is vastly different from real-life music. The most telling example is Hype Machine's yearly 'Music Blog Zeitgeist,' which counts down the Top 50 performers based on how often they're mentioned in over 820 prominent music blogs. Hint: Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Eminem, Jay Z and Katy Perry didn't make the list.
